Does your family enjoy reading great literature or would you like them to learn about notable authors? There's a neat game that I've been introduced to that puts adds fun to learning facts about writers of the 20th century.
Notable Novelists is a card game for literary buffs ages 12 and older. There are 54 cards for 18 authors. The 3 cards per author create the Literary Set, which is the object of the game (the player with the most sets wins).

The Literary Set contains the following cards:

1. Author Card - the author's name, portrait, and birth/death date.
2. Library Card - 3 important books by the author.
3. Bio Card - a piece of biographical info about the author

To keep the game "timeless", the authors chosen "are some of the most important writers of the 20th century". "Many of their novels, essays and short story collections appear on "top 100 books of the 20th century" lists." (Notable Novelists)

To play, each player is given 4 cards and the rest of the cards are placed face down in the center of the playing area. Each player takes a turn, starting with the youngest player, and attempts to collect a complete "Literary Set".

The game is played similar to a popular childhood card game which makes it easy to understand. The current player asks another player for a specific card, if that player has it, it is given as requested. If that player does not have the card, the requesting player draws a card from the deck to try and get the desired card. If it matches and completes the set, the set is shown to the group and placed on the table, and the player goes again. If not, that card is kept and the turn moves to the next player. It's simple enough for even young players to play, but educational enough for older players, too.

The card set comes in a handy case with a flip-top (seen in the above picture). Both the cards and the case are of durable construction, the cards being of heavy cardstock and the case is slightly heavier. According to Notable Novelists website, the cards and case are created using recycled paper and soy ink.

Notable Novelists can be purchased for $10.95

What we thought: the cards are great. I really like their durability. Most card sets are flimsy which cause them to bend easily but Notable Novelists are created to last! The game is fun to play, and easy. I believe older elementary kids could easily play along. Though they may not know the authors yet, this game will give a little bit of info on each novelists and it may encourage the younger player to read a few pieces later. Though the game is designed to play a certain way, we also played it as a Jeopardy type game to see if we could remember the facts. It was fun!

I think that if you or your family are book lovers, you will enjoy Notable Novelists.
