I remember when I was a kid, growing up in a rural town "in the middle of nowhere", we only had 3 channels on our TV, 3(NBC)-5(CBS)-9(ABC). Once in awhile we would get 20(same as 9) & 24(PBS). We didn't watch TV a lot, but one of the highlights would be Sunday night because of the family movie that would be on. The movie would always be family friendly, non-violent, and clean. Today, there are so many channels to choose from, and very few offer family appropriate, clean movies. And even fewer families actually watch TV together.

Well Proctor & Gamble & Walmart have teamed up to try and change that. They are bringing back Family Movie Night. Quality movies are now "being broadcast FREE on network TV".

Family Movie Night means:
* Great quality movies *
* Good for the whole family *
* Teachable moments *
* Even family friendly commercials! *

Picture
I was given the opportunity to watch one of these family movies to tell you about it before it airs. I watched Game of Your Life. It is set to air Friday, December 2nd at 8/7c on NBC. The following is the synopsis given to me.

"When industrious high school gamer Zach Taylor lands a prized scholarship to the prestigious Digital Institute of Game Design (DIGD), his future breaks wide open. The opportunity to study under gaming legend Marcus Bentton and alongside the country’s most creative minds will certainly propel him into a successful career as a video game designer. That is, if he can pass the infamous freshman project that eliminates more than half of the class within the first three months.

Paired with brilliant yet socially awkward teammates Phillip and Donald, the trio persuades Sara Ramirez – a determined and striking team leader with whom Zach has a history (and possibly a future) – to join their team. Working off-campus in the teched-out Lincoln Alley loft, the four set out to involve the entire campus in a quirky new social interactive game. But as the group becomes entrenched in the project, Zach learns that his father Billy, a widower, is facing growing financial woes at home. To help out, Zach accepts an opportunity to work directly with Marcus Bentton on a secretive side project that seems too good to be true. The effort requires nearly all of Zach’s time and energy, which he should be devoting to the project. Struggling to keep it together, Zach is torn between his responsibility to his team, his admiration for Bentton and a chance to help his father.

Everything comes to a breaking point when Zach’s team threatens to remove him from the group and the deceptive truth behind Bentton’s project comes to light. With the guidance of Professor Abbie Lambert, Zach must make a decision that not only affects his future, but the lives and livelihoods of the people around him as well. It’s a revealing story that recognizes the magnitude behind the choices we make and the importance loyalty plays in making good decisions.

My family and I watched this movie together. There was no foul language, no violence (except a video boxing game), no sexual innuendo's, and there was a moral/value given. It's not often in today's society that any type of moral lesson is offered, it was refreshing to see. Though the beginning of the movie didn't hold my daughter's interest at first (we were watching through the TV connected to the PC & couldn't get the video to go fullscreen), she did begin to follow it and started anticipating the next thing to happen. I think everyone enjoyed the movie, except for the dead space placed in for the commercials, lol. My daughter said "I normally don't like commercials, and now I don't like them when they're not even there" :^)

What I liked the most, like I said above, is that there is a moral to the story. Actions are questioned and values are tested. Zach (Titus Makin Jr), the main character, makes an unwitting bad decision based on the desire to help his dad & the family business. This causes his team leader to confront him & call him out. He leaves for home to think about his options, when his father tells him "what home is, son, it's love & loyalty", & gives him inspiration, despite the desperate financial situation they face. He realizes he has to make a choice, but knows there is only one right one. He goes back to his team, humbled, and says "I'm sorry...I can only ask for your forgiveness". That, alone, says a lot to me about this movie. There's no punches, no beating around the bush; it's right there in front of you - we make mistakes and we need to admit it and seek forgiveness; that choices aren't necessarily easy, but the answers are obvious if we look. Each of the main characters have important roles in the lessons of the movie. The actors/actresses include Lea Thompson, Dean Cameron, Marcus Bentton, Phillip Reese, & Sara Ramirez. You can meet the cast or view the trailer here.

Game of Your Life is a quality family movie that, I believe, you will enjoy. Be sure to tune in to your NBC channel on December 3rd to watch. You can "like" Family Movie Night on FB or follow on Twitter, too.
I received a special link, free, to watch this movie prior to it's network release with the sole purpose to provide an honest review after watching. For more information on this, please see my disclaimer

Have you had struggling readers at home? Have you been searching for a means to help them, but aren't sure exactly what they need or what products are available? There is a product that I have been introduced to that just may be the answer you need.

Read Naturally is a company that developed out of co-founder Candace Ihnot's desire to help struggling readers. While working on her Master's degree in Special Education, Mrs. Ihnot designed this unique strategy to help these readers gain confidence, skill, & proficiency.
With promising results, she and her husband formed a means for other teachers to utilize this strategy in their own classrooms. Since 1991, Read Naturally has been helping improve fluency to struggling readers, and the Ihnot's continue to develop new programs, based on this strategy, that can be used at home or in the classroom.

Picture
So what is this strategy? Research has shown that there are three specific strategies that are most effective in helping a student's reading fluency: teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. Read Naturally utilizes all of these in their programs, and has had proven success over the years, with numerous awards, including Teacher's Choice Award & the National Parenting Seal of Approval.

Teacher Modeling is the process of the teacher reading the text, while the student follows along. This allows the student to hear the correct pronunciations, expressions, and phrasing. It encourages the proper form and style of reading.

Repeated Reading is exactly as it sounds: repeating reading until the student has achieved the goal set by the teacher for each specific student. "Practice makes perfect" is the saying we've always heard. Though perfection is subjective, practicing to reach a goal offers an objective means to measure the reading ability.

Progress Monitoring allows the teacher and student to monitor the progress being made. By using graphs, each student's progress can be visualized, thus encouraging the student to continue improving his/her skills.

Read Naturally also supports the five essential components of reading, identified by the National Reading Panel. You can read more about these here.

Read Naturally offers different products based on you, your student, and your needs. Through the TOS Crew, I was given the opportunity to try Read Live: "Read Naturally's Next Generation Reading Intervention". Read Live is a "comprehensive set of research-based programs that assesses reading and engages students with a motivating curriculum that supports fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and phonics." (Read Live). It is Read Naturally's system, set to the web, which offers incredible options for the student to work independently, yet under the guidance of the teacher/parent. Read Live allows the teacher to individualize the process to each student, according to his level of reading. It includes all 3 of the elements  in the Read Naturally strategy and is fully engaging. The following is a brief overview video:
To get started with Read Live, I was given a license to enroll my students in the program. Each license allows the teacher to add a school & a student. The Benchmark Assessor Live is a screening tool that can be used to assess your student's oral reading ability, to determine which level to start out at.
Picture
Once the level is determined, you have various options in setting up each student. As you can see on the right, each student has "story options" that are set by the teacher. These include: key words, prediction, cold timing, read along, practice, quiz, and retelling. Key words are 4 new vocabulary words that will be in the story. The student will hear them read and are given the definition. Prediction offers a creative element to the program. The student is given a picture and then types out a prediction using the key words. Cold timing is the area that the student reads a new passage without having heard it read. This can be independent or with the teacher present. Read along is exactly that, the student listens as the passage is read by the computer. The voice is a female voice and is easy to listen to. The options in this section include number of times to read along, the speed in which it's read, and there is a Spanish read along for some levels. The next level is practice or "hot timing". The student practices reading the passage at a set time limit. This is the same passage as the cold timing and read along, so it offers that repetition factor, allowing the student to recognize the words and build confidence in his ability to read. The is then the quiz section and a retell section. The teacher has the option to use all, some, or even one, of the sections for each student. There are tutorial videos to help guide your decisions, too.

Picture
This is the cold timing section. Each student will choose which story she wants to learn about, and that same story is used throughout the section. Only after all sections are complete will the student move to a new passage/story. As you can see, there is an area to "start timing" and "cancel timing". Once start timing is clicked, a clock appears and the student begins reading. There is an option to have a reading guide on or off. In the picture the reading guide is on and is highlighting the first line of the story. The student can use this guide as sort of an underline for the line. It allows him to stay in place while reading. This is a great tool for easily distracted students. While reading, the student can click on words that she doesn't understand and they will be pronounced for her. Once the time runs out (preset by teacher), the student clicks the last word and then is given a score of how many correct words were read. The student will then go to the next section that is assigned. The quiz questions help determine comprehension. This is a good way to find out how the student is reading, if he understands what he's reading or is just saying the words. During the "teacher required" moments of the program (cold timing & passing section), the student is given the opportunity to play Wordtastic, an interactive vocabulary game. This allows the student to increase her vocabulary words while improving her reading fluency, how wonderful is that?!

What we thought: I really like the idea of this program. I like that the stories are interesting, that I can quickly enter into the teachers section when I needed to, and that my student could see his progress. At the end of each section, there are awards given, too, based on how the student did. This is a nice touch. It offers that sense of accomplishment that is vital to learning. There were a couple of things we had issues with, though. The #1 issue was with the cold timing. I am not sure if I wasn't getting it or if there is a true issue. But when my son (and daughter*) would read, using the timer, at the end he would click the final word read and a message would come up and be read by the program "your score is much higher than your goal, please read the story again". It was very frustrating because he couldn't move past this point. I changed the goal level and finally removed the cold timing section as a requirement. I did not contact support since I was able to bypass the issue, this is why I said that it may not be an issue everyone has, just us :^) Another issue I had at first, was figuring out how to pass my student. I finally realized there is a "pass" section that I needed to click. This was my issue, not one everyone will have.
*my daughter is 15yo and a highly skilled reader.. I had her try the program just for the review. She couldn't get past the cold timing, either, no matter what I put in for the goal. She became quickly frustrated and stopped. She did like the stories that were available at the higher level, though, so I printed them, which is a great option. Though my son does have issues with reading, he has improved substantially over the last year. He does not like repetition, though I know it is an important tool. That said, I could see that Read Live was helpful for him, he just hasn't seen it yet.

Read Live is a wonderful program if you have struggling readers. The cost is just $149.00 for 12 months. The subscription includes:

  • Access to 13 Sequenced and 6 Phonics curriculum levels for each enrolled student (Read Naturally Live).
  • Access to oral reading fluency benchmark assessment passages and reporting for up to 30 students (Benchmark Assessor Live).
  • Online teacher training videos.
  • The ability to reassign purchased seats if a student completes or leaves the program.
  • Technical support
You can also try the program out FREE for 60 days. This will give you an insight into the programs potential to help your student. If you have a struggling reader, give it a try. Helping her to gain improved reading skills and confidence in her abilities is the whole purpose of Read Naturally. It may be just what you've been looking for. Are you looking for that perfect child friendly toy that is built to endure the strenuous play common with kids? Would you also like it to be educational, personalized, and made in the USA? Think it's not possible? Well I want to tell you about a great company that does offer all of these qualities in each of their handmade gifts.
Picture
Kid Puzzles began in the mid 80's by Marvin & Margaret Jack Their passion developed as they created puzzles and toys for their own children and they soon started Kid Puzzles as a business. Their high quality wooden puzzles are designed with every child in mind. They are non-toxic, contain no lead or cadmium, and are made of durable, premium grade, maple-faced laminate. The are cut by Marvin and hand painted by Margaret! That is amazing to me; that after over 25 years, they continue to invest their own time into each creation.

The puzzles that are offered come in various styles, shapes, & designs. There are different categories of puzzles: peg puzzles, puzzles without pegs, 3D puzzles, and puzzle stools. Each category of puzzle can be personalized with your child's name. These are great gifts for all children, too: grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, school friends, etc.

Picture
There are the basic puzzles for the young learner, with simple shapes. These puzzles have pegs on each piece so they are easier for children to grasp. The puzzle on the left is a standard puzzle, the one on the right is personalized, but they both have pegs. Each piece is well designed and the pegs are solid hardwood. They are drilled into the puzzle and glued with non-toxic glue. They will not break with normal play. As many of you know, there are puzzles on the market that are cheaply made ("is that even real wood?") and break easily. Kid Puzzles are created to last a lifetime!

Picture
These beautiful puzzles are non-pegged. As you can see, they are the same puzzle, but the right has been personalized.  You can also see that, though the puzzles are essentially the same, they are different. Because of the handmade quality, each piece will be unique to any other. Can you spot the differences? (Besides the name) I really like this quality. It makes every piece that much more special!

Picture
The puzzle stools are just cool :^) I think these would make a wonderful gift for a child. They are educational and functional. Again, they can be purchased with a standard image or personalized with a name. The "Grandma Loves You" is a non-personalized puzzle. So if you don't have time to wait for the personalization (1-3weeks), you can still order a great gift.

Picture

The 3D puzzles are pretty awesome, too. The image above "Melissa" is a 3D puzzle. This undersea ocean puzzle has 3 layers and is beautiful. Kid Puzzles 3D puzzles can be "Stock 3D" or "Special Order". Stock orders can still be personalized but are not as in depth as the special order. The puzzle to the left is titled "Deep Village Life" and has 12 layers. It is geared for those 10years or older because of the complexity. It cannot be personalized, but is gorgeous on it's own.

Picture
We received the wooden alphabet puzzle for review, and will be also receiving a personalized puzzle in the future.  Both of my kids were impressed by the quality of the puzzle. It is so much better than any puzzle we have ever seen in a store. One of the things that I liked the most about this puzzle, and every other Kid Puzzle, is that there is a design behind the piece so that the child can easily find where it goes. Though we want our children to learn critical thinking and manipulation of parts, we also don't want them to get so frustrated that they give up. You can see in this picture the letters under the pieces. There is another example of this in the "123" puzzle above.

One other interesting thing about Kid Puzzles, is that if you lose a part, there are instructions on how to get a replacement part created specifically for your puzzle. When have you ever found that in a puzzle?

Kid Puzzles is a special company, too. They donate their puzzles to local organizations to be given to low income families. This is a wonderful aspect to be admired.

You can purchase Kid Puzzles through their site. The prices vary and start as low as $17. The more intricate the puzzle, the higher the price, but they are well worth it. These are puzzles that can easily become family heirlooms.

Christmas and the holidays are approaching fast, so order your puzzle today! You will not be disappointed!

Homeschooling a high school student has been challenging, rewarding, frustrating, and fun. It isn't always easy and there are many demands throughout our days. One of the pressing issues is preparing for the SAT/PSAT. Taking one of the tests is inevitable and, therefore, extremely important to prepare for. Unlike most tests, the SAT & PSAT are from a different breed all together. They are longer, encompass more, and can cause high anxiety levels in the parents and student. This is because throughout school, students have heard the horror stories of taking the SAT and the "outcome" of getting a low score.

But fear is not a necessary emotion when thinking about the SAT. As a member of the TOS Crew, I have been given the opportunity to discover that there actually is a way to prepare for the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT that can greatly increase your student's scores and decrease his anxiety. The College Prep Genius DVD set (recently revised & updated to the 2nd Edition) offers a remarkable strategy to help your student master the SAT, or as the website says...
Picture
"College Prep Genius is a revolutionary program designed to help students master the strategies behind the test and learn how to get the correct answers" (collegeprepgenius.com).

How is it any different than other products you've seen on the market? Let me explain.

To start with, let me tell you what College Prep Genius doesn't do. It doesn't teach how to answer every single question by analyzing it, stressing over it, or teaching strategies that will apply to the test only.

How this program does work is by teaching techniques and strategies for each section of the SAT, using ACRONYMS that are easy to memorize & simple to follow, exposing pitfalls that students fall into & ways to get away from them, and so many more wonderfully creative steps to increase SAT scores that will help pave the way for your students academic life.

The College Prep Genius program was developed by homeschooling mom, Jean Burk. While preparing her own children for the SAT, she began looking deeper into it and discovered patterns, tricks, pitfalls, question types, etc, that are on every single test. The result? Her son and daughter were offered full scholarships to so may schools that Jean writes "For my son, we received seven trash bags full of scholarship offers from colleges across the country – ALL based on his PSAT score!!!". From there she was able to put it all together and created College Prep Genius. She now travels the US offering her wisdom to students and parents with the intent of helping them get into college with great scores, which increases the opportunities for scholarships and possibly full tuition rides!

College Prep Genius has been featured on channels like NBC, CBS, Fox, and The Homeschool Channel. The following video is one of the show which will give you even more of an insight on the program:

The DVD set includes the College Prep Genius 325 page textbook, 79 page workbook(with extra printable homework pages), & 4-DVD's that have 12 lessons in total. Jean recommends allowing 45minutes to an hour for each lesson and working 2-4hrs a week on studying, depending on age & grade. She fully explains the SAT at the beginning of the textbook, which offered me a whole new perspective. I loved her candidness and thoroughness. It is quite apparent that Jean has put much time & devotion into preparing this program I encourage you to take a look at it for your student.

You can purchase the College Prep Genius DVD set for $99.00 (a 25% discount) & there is a 100%, 30 day, money back guarantee! You will get:
* New strategies and more detailed explanations *
* Easy to use format *
* 12 straight-forward lessons *
* Bonus material including appendixes of must know math terms,
Latin roots, and prefixes and suffixes *
* New motivation test *
College Prep Genius DVD set has quickly become an invaluable program to us. My daughter has already learned tips & tricks that I know will help her on her SAT. The critical thinking and time management skills will, undoubtedly, stay with her throughout her life, too. I know that you will appreciate this program as much as we have. Do you have digital pictures on your computer that are just waiting to get printed off or made into a photobook? If you're anything like me, your answer is yes. Since my very first digital camera with the appeal of printing photos at home, I have accumulated file after file of pictures not printed. Along with the files on my computer, I also have backed up files on CD/DVD's and flashdrives to be sure not to lose them. I have often found myself praying for my children's future spouses. Praying that The Lord will be preparing them today, for what tomorrow will bring. And then praying for my children the same. We, as emotional beings, crave to have that "perfect" person that "completes" us. There is no such thing, of course, to be perfect. And only The Lord can fully complete us.

I once heard how a father encouraged his daughter to write a list out of all the things she wouldn't want in a husband. He had her do this well before she thought about boys in any special way. This list helped guide her when she did start to think about courting or being "more than friends". I loved the concept. How often do we have a set mold for our future spouse, complete with appearance, thoughts, actions, motivations, etc., only to alter them as we get older and allow the undesirable things to be accepted? Appearance is obviously not one that we should set, but actions, qualities, values...those are things that shouldn't be altered.

With all of this in mind, I want to tell you of the opportunity I was given to review an e-book version of the book The Person I Marry by Gary Bower. It is a touching book written to be read by children of all ages. It is beautifully illustrated by Gary's wife, Jan. The artwork is phenomenal! The story is written in rhyme and focuses on the characteristics and qualities that are so necessary to have a loving, strong, and enduring marriage: "respect, kindness, honesty, faithfulness, thoughtfulness, patience".

The Person I Marry is 32 pages of wonderfully thought out verses with illustrations that enhance the very essence of the words. It received the 2010 Christian Small Publisher Association Book of the Year award. It is one of books in the Bright Future Series "which shares Biblical principles for families in beautiful and down-to-earth ways". With their marriage of 33 years, Gary & Jan have worked together to create inspiring books for the whole family. They are parents to 12 children, which Jan uses, along with friends & family, as models for her paintings. From their website, the following gives an insight of why they have created these books:

Picture

"As exciting and fulfilling as it is to be an artist and a writer, other things rank higher on our list when it comes to who we are.  We also feel extremely humbled and grateful to be Christians, best friends, parents of twelve, and grandparents of nine."  ~  Gary & Jan Bower

Here is a brief video with a sample of some of the verses in The Person I Marry. I would love to show you more, but I encourage you to get this book for yourself, your children, or loved ones, to read the incredible, heartfelt and Godly words of wisdom that are sure to be respected and loved by all who hear.
You can purchase The Person I Marry from Bower Books for $11.99. I am sure you will enjoy this book for years to come as you share it with others who are developing their ideas about marriage. Please click below to read additional reviews from fellow crew members.

Today I am thankful for so many things. The Lord provides all of my needs & I know that He is faithful. He is always with me and I am thankful.

I am also thankful today for the safety of my son. He has been blessed to have an opportunity to participate in luging at the Olympic Track and today was his first day (ever) on the ice. He did great (I'm biased, yes) and it was so neat to see him out there.

I am thankful that The Lord protected him from injury today & that he is having a great time. It's wonderful to see him smile and be enjoying himself. It's beautiful here, too. And tonight, my headache is gone, for this I am incredibly grateful. The elevation change and pressure brought on a migraine that was persistent. It started yesterday and despite meds, it wasn't going away. But The Lord took care of it tonight.

I hope to post again tomorrow, but if not, continue to think about what you are grateful for. Leave me note if you are inspired to. Thanks for reading. Please take a moment and click on the gratitude challenge link above to read what others are thankful for today :^)

It's the end of the 4th day and I have had many reasons to be thankful today.  It was another beautiful sunny day and even though the temp was lower than I wanted, it was great to have the sun out all day long!
Picture
I'm thankful that I was able to get a few hours of sleep before being called out at 4ish this morning. Now that I am no longer working nights, I've discovered the reason I always said that I am not a night person, lol. As much as I liked working nights at the ED with my great co-workers at that time, I really am thankful I no longer work nights. I need my sleep :^)

Today I am mostly thankful that The Lord comforts me in all things. He is ALWAYS with me and knows my every need. He wraps His loving arms around me whenever I call out to Him. Thank you, Lord, for your comfort & strength.

Have you thought about what you are thankful for today? Drop me a comment and let me know. Be sure to click the link above to connect to other bloggers that are thankful.

Today is the 3rd day of the Gratitude Challenge. I missed posting yesterday but I was very thankful I was able to get most things prepared for my son to go to camp. I am excited for him to be able to have this experience. I am thankful to The Lord for blessing him with this opportunity.

For today, I am thankful that The Lord is in control of my life and all things around me. He knows all things and I put my trust in Him. He leads me, comforts me, and teaches me. I am so thankful for this. I am thankful that He still loves me despite my sins; that I have been forgiven through Christ Jesus.

I was convicted to write about this tonight as I was watching tv and was, yet again, disappointed with the media's version of reality. I am still surprised when I hear about the slandering that happens everyday to good people. And the failure to report on what's really important, and factual. It's crazy! But I know that even in all of this, The Lord is in control and knows exactly what's right, and what tomorrow's going to bring. I know that nothing happens without His knowledge and Will. I am thankful.

What are you thankful for today? Until tomorrow.
